OUTDOOR TIPS

  • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.
  • When planting flower gardens and shrubs, consider using native plants that are low water use. For ideas on plant selection, visit Desert Survivors Nursery
  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing.  The clippings act as a natural mulch that reduces evaportion and provides nutrients to the soil as the they begin to decompose.
  • Once lawns begin to grow, raise the lawn mower blade.  Slightly longer grass shades and protects the soils allowing for a longer time between watering.
  • Avoid using your sprinkler systems on windy days.  The water blows away instead of falling on your grass.
  • Instead of bagging and throwing away your leaves and other green waste, use it as a natural mulch around the base of shrubs and plants.
  • Utilize rain water as much as possible by collecting it or directing it towards water loving plants and trees.

INDOOR TIPS

  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth.
  • Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.
  • When buying new appliances, consider Enery Star versions that use less water.  See the rebate form for qualifying appliances.
  • Put a bucket in your shower then use the water you collected to give your potted plants a nice drink.
